Wow. This quilt is just wow. It's one of the wow-iest quilts I've worked on. I love it.
Here's how the owner came to acquire it:
I don’t collect quilts or even know how to use a sewing machine. I just really liked the quilt colors and patterns.....when I saw it in an antique mall in Columbia, MO (I honestly love Orange as a color). So much so, that after leaving without it I regretted it. The following Monday I was back at work and just called them on a whim and made them an offer and they agreed to ship it to me.
Well, what a fun story! I love that the quilt kept calling to him
from half way across the country and waited for him to call the
dealer!

Quilts by Aunt Betty
I've recently had a lovely woman visit me with her collection of family quilts. These two were made by her Aunt Betty. The owner says she only met Aunt Betty a couple of times, but remembers her as a very happy women. We both think that Betty's quilts display her spirit quite clearly!
This one is a basic LeMoyne Star block. What I love about it is the happy mix of colors, and the way Aunt Betty played with color placement and combinations in a most enjoyable way.

Reproducing an Antique Quilt
I bought this quilt years ago when I was working at an antique quilt shop. (It was a heavenly place to spend my time, I assure you!) Whenever the pickers would come in to sell their finds, we had the option to buy things, too. (Heavenly and then some!)
I bought this quilt from one of those pickers. The back fabric is in rough condition and there are some tears in the borders through all the layers. (The faded-looking upper left corner is due to the light coming in my window, though). Here's why I fell in love with this quilt:

LeMoyne Star Plus 9-Patch Equals a Great Quilt
This quilt is signed and dated, one of my favorite kinds of quilts. It was made in 2002 in Intercourse, PA, by Esther Martin. Sign and date all your quilts, folks! Quilt lovers of the future will thank you!
Repairing fairly recent quilts like this one is very different from repairing quilts of the 1800s or the early 20th century. It's so easy to find patching fabrics! All I have to do is go into my sewing room and look at the piles of fabrics I've bought over the years for my own quiltmaking.

An Amazing Day at an Auction ~ Quilt Rescue!
Beautiful Windmills, 1930s; lovely, fine quilting.
Tried hard to win, but lost to the antique dealer.
What follows is a guest post by one of my readers. I think of it as a cautionary tale about what wonders can be lost without a bit of research into the proper care of antiques. She had the good luck and good sense to help rescue an amazing and amazingly mistreated quilt collection. I am grateful to her for the time she has taken to share her story here. (The photos were taken when the quilts were on display, before the "disaster".)
After reading this sad tale, I hope you'll join me in thanking her for giving it the happiest ending possible.
